Tooth pain? How we can help you at our Acton dental clinic

Acton Vale Dentists LogoThe word ‘emergency’ can conjure up all sorts of horrific images in our minds. We are accustomed to seeing a number of programmes on TV based on urgent hospital admissions and might not associate emergency dental care with anything other than a really serious situation.

But the truth is that emergency dentistry should be sought for any problem that is painful, or where it is needed to prevent further damage to a tooth or to save the tooth altogether. Naturally, we will prioritise cases that need to be seen most urgently, but we will do all that we can to provide fast relief for everyone when it is needed.

If you are unsure whether your particular issue would qualify for an emergency appointment, please don’t just leave it until your next check up date. Things may well have become much worse by then. You can always give us a call at the Acton Vale Dental Centre if you need friendly and helpful advice.

The following examples are some of the possible scenarios where you should contact us for an urgent appointment.

Toothache

Especially if your toothache is very painful, but even if it is relatively mild, you should contact our reception team for an appointment. If you have a toothache, it means that there is a problem that will almost certainly become worse. Not only could leaving it until your next scheduled appointment mean more pain and a larger filling, but you could even lose the tooth altogether if you leave it for too long.

Trauma

If you have received a blow to the face from a fall or sports accidents for example, you should always have your teeth checked by one of our dentists as soon as possible afterwards. Fractures and cracks are not uncommon in situations like this and may not be visible to you. Depending on the nature of the accident etc, you should also consider whether you need to go to the A&E department of the nearest hospital to have it checked out. Head injuries can be serious and life changing and you should prioritise this over any dental requirements.

Swelling

Especially if accompanied by pain and/or a fever, you should have any facial swellings checked straight away. It is likely to indicate an infection and this requires prompt attention. If neglected, this could lead to very serious health issues in some cases. Don’t take any chances and have it checked out by our experienced team.

Damaged teeth

Any form of damage that you notice such as a cracked, chipped or even a broken tooth should be examined as soon as possible. In addition to the fact that these may have sharp edges that cut into your lips etc, it is also likely that the tooth will be in a weaker condition, and the damage so far could become much worse quite quickly if you ignore it, leading you to requiring more extensive treatment to save the tooth.

Restoration issues

If a crown has become detached, a filling has worked loose or your orthodontics are causing you problems, you should see us as soon as possible. Many restorations are protecting the tooth and in addition to any discomfort that these issues might be causing, could lead to further problems with the tooth if you don’t act quickly enough.

Severe gum problems

If your gums are inflamed, very painful or if there is pus present, you should not ignore this. Periodontal diseases are responsible for significant tooth loss. The sooner you act, the more likely it is that your teeth can be saved.

In general then, anything related to your teeth that isn’t routine can be considered to be  urgent. Our reception team are experienced in offering initial advice and are able to prioritise those most in need of urgent care. In many cases, they may also be able to offer advice on how to protect the tooth and how to remain as comfortable as possible until it is time for your appointment.
