Invisalign – Modern Convenient Tooth Straightening

Invisalign – Modern Convenient Tooth Straightening

Visible, uncomfortable braces can be a thing of the past with Invisalign aligners.

Many dental treatments can provide great results in just a brief period of time. A classic example of this would be the teeth whitening procedure which can whiten your teeth in just a week or so. One treatment that does take longer to produce the desired results though is orthodontic treatment. While it is true that cosmetic orthodontics are available for very minor issues such as slightly crooked visible front teeth and which may only take a few weeks to work, many people have to wear orthodontics for a longer period of time to avoid risking damage to the teeth through applying too much pressure on them.

It is understandable then, that this deters a lot of people, many of whom probably have a picture of wearing the very visible and well known metal braces for a long period of time. The good news for patients of the Acton Vale Dental Centre is that this need no longer be the case, and modern systems such as Invisalign offer a much more user friendly experience which we will discuss here.

Why straight teeth are beneficial

The most obvious reason for having straight and even teeth would be to have an attractive smile. This is a definite benefit of course,  but straight teeth are also easier to keep clean and will reduce problems such as tooth decay. This is often caused by food and bacteria that becomes trapped between crooked or overlapping teeth, and where a toothbrush or even dental floss may not be able to easily reach.

A truly modern orthodontic system

Traditional dental braces have long been made from metal and use a series of adjustable wires and brackets to straighten the teeth. In addition to the high visibility of these systems, food becoming trapped in the wiring can lead to tooth decay and gum disease being more difficult to avoid. On both counts, Invisalign offers a great improvement.

Instead of using wires and brackets, Invisalign uses a series of medical grade plastic transparent ‘trays’. Each of these is worn for a short  period of time before being replaced by the next. This progressively moves the teeth towards the desired position.

The use of transparent trays means that these are much less visible than traditional braces and most people won’t even know that you are wearing them. This is far from the only advantage though as, in certain situations such as a date or a job interview where you might worry that people can see them close up, you can simply remove them yourself for the duration. A word of caution here though; you should only remove these for the minimum of time possible as removing them too often or for too long will slow down the treatment process.

The comfort factor

Some people find traditional braces uncomfortable to wear which is a problem as they may need to be worn for a year or more. Users of Invisalign often find that they are more comfortable and one of the main reasons for this is that they are produced following scans that are taken of your teeth, making them an exact fit for each person. Although they may feel a little strange at first, as you would expect; most people find wearing them to be a comfortable experience.

The convenience factor

Not only are the trays almost invisible and comfortable to wear but they are also very convenient. There is no need to worry about food becoming trapped in them, which can be embarrassing and potentially harmful to your teeth. Unlike traditional braces which require professional intervention, you can simply remove the aligners yourself. As stated earlier, this should only be done for limited occasions and usually just for when you are eating and also for cleaning your teeth. This means that you can eat whatever you want without the embarrassment of getting spinach etc stuck in the wiring and also that you can clean your teeth effectively and maintain good oral health throughout the duration of your treatment.
