This applies to the very youngest, to help ensure their teeth erupt correctly, through to the elderly, to enable them to eat well enough to maintain good health as well as their appearance. Each stage of life has its own unique opportunities and challenges; and who better to help you through these than our very own dentists here at Acton Vale Dental Centre.

A blog, in itself, of course, isn’t really sufficient to give you all of the information that you need, and attending check ups regularly will help you to keep on top of your oral health. We hope that you do find some useful information below and please do feel free to ask us if you have any questions.

Children (pre-teens)

There can be a tendency to think that dental care at this age is less important than when they become a little older. However, early intervention is essential, both to ensure that a baby’s first teeth erupt correctly and that premature tooth loss doesn’t happen, which would leave them more vulnerable to crooked teeth later. This is also an important age to get them to look after their teeth correctly, with quality brushing and an awareness of the damage of too much sugar. Our family friendly dentists can help with this.

Teenagers

A challenging time for most parents as their previously obliging children start to rebel. This can even stretch to their oral health care; eating junk foods that are often high in sugar, neglecting their teeth cleaning, or doing it only very briefly. Towards the later teenage years, other challenges such as smoking and alcohol may become a factor too.

This is often a time when children need to have orthodontic treatment, not for cosmetic purposes, but to make sure that their teeth grow straight and correctly. Modern methods are much more discreet than older methods, making it more palatable for teenagers who are conscious of their appearance. For teenagers who participate in sports such as football, parents might want to consider a mouthguard during activities. We are happy to discuss this with you.

Young adults

As our teenage children turn into adults and go to university or start a job, they will also start to take more responsibility for their own oral health too. This does not mean you should ‘take your foot off the gas’ though as they will have busy lives and may sometimes forget the basics, including their check ups. Reminding them never does any harm and is better than them neglecting their teeth and gums.

Once they have reached the age of 18, they are also eligible to have cosmetic procedures such as the whitening of teeth if they wish. It is worth talking to them if they are considering this and making sure that they have any treatment carried out at a UK clinic such as the Acton Vale Dental Centre, rather than be tempted by cheaper treatments abroad which also come with an increased risk of, sometimes permanent, damage.

Adults up to and including middle age

By this time, we should be looking after our teeth well, with regular cleaning, good diet and regular dental and hygienist appointments. It is also a time when our teeth can start to suffer, largely due to years of wear and tear. Fillings are likely to be needed from time to time, and perhaps crowns to restore any damaged teeth that are in danger of weakening further. Monitoring of previous restorations is important too.

Restorative treatments like veneers can also help to restore the appearance of teeth as they become duller over the years. Teeth whitening procedures can be effective as well. We will examine your teeth and discuss the available options with you. Gum disease can be more prevalent at this age, especially in middle age as our mouth gradually starts to produce less saliva. Good cleaning, hydration and regular professional cleans (scale and polish) will help.

Tooth loss is not altogether unusual during this phase of our lives either. Previous neglect or accident can cause a tooth to need extracting. We offer a range of replacement options including dentures and dental implants to replace missing teeth and will discuss these options with you so that you can make an informed choice. However, with good care, there is no reason that healthy teeth should not be your objective throughout life.

Later years

Even in this period, many of our older patients take pride in the way that they look and some opt for cosmetic treatment to help them look as good as possible. Healthy teeth are also essential so that a full range of nutrious food can be accessed without any compromise to chewing efficiency.

We hope that today’s blog has given you a taste of what we can offer you at the various stages of your life, and your children’s too!
