Benefits of straighter teeth

Most people who consider taking up this special offer at the Acton Vale Dental Centre will do so for aesthetic reasons. Even the whitest of smiles can be spoiled if the teeth are crooked and uneven. Unfortunately, even any minor corrections that are needed can take months to achieve and more significant corrections can take a year or more. This often puts people off having orthodontic treatment because they are worried about the stigma of wearing braces that are visible when you speak or smile. Invisalign offers a new approach which helps to minimise the problem – we will discuss this shortly.

Your teeth won’t just benefit visually from having them straightened though. There are many practical advantages to having straighter teeth, many of which mean that they are more likely to be healthy too. Teeth that don’t overlap or press close together are much easier to keep clean. Bacteria and food debris can become trapped more easily in uneven teeth and reaching these areas to brush or floss may be next to impossible. In this situation, the patient is more likely to develop tooth decay in these areas, so straightening your teeth can help you to avoid this too.

Traditional braces v Invisalign

If we accept that we need orthodontic treatment to straighten our teeth, the question is, what type? While there are many different types, some of which make small cosmetic adjustments, much treatment will require longer term options. These largely fall into two categories; traditional ‘train track’ style braces or modern ‘invisible’ ones such as Invisalign. Both will straighten your teeth but, as the treatment takes a long time to achieve its aim, it makes sense to use orthodontics (braces) that you feel comfortable with, and ones that won’t significantly affect your appearance.

The old metal style braces are highly visible. Even modern versions, although using much finer materials, will show when you smile. There is also another disadvantage with these in that food can become trapped in the wiring and is often difficult to remove. Not only can this be unsightly, but can also lead to tooth decay as the trapped sugars and bacteria eat away at your tooth enamel.

Both of these significant issues are addressed by Invisalign. This orthodontic system replaces the ‘wire and bracket’ approach of traditional dental braces altogether, and replaces them with a series of transparent medical grade plastic ‘trays’ that fit directly over your teeth. These are produced following x-rays and scans that we take of your teeth and are unique to you. Each tray is worn for a few weeks (to be advised by your orthodontist following your consultation). They are then removed and replaced by the next set. This process continues until, after the final set of trays, your teeth are now beautifully aligned.

Unlike braces, the Invisalign trays are designed to be removable by the patient. This should be done when you are eating meals and for cleaning your teeth. The fact that you remove them when eating means that you won’t have to choose foods that won’t get stuck in wiring and you can eat whatever you want. Because you can brush and floss your teeth normally, the risk of tooth decay is also greatly diminished. You will also need to keep the trays clean and we will give guidance on this when you choose this option.

As you can see from our special offer, you can also give your smile a real boost once your teeth have been straightened. To bring out the best in your smile, we also offer a tooth whitening treatment as part of our special offer.
