(In)visibility
One of the main reasons that people choose Invisalign over traditional braces is simply because they are much less visible. The fine transparent plastic trays that are used are very discreet and often can’t be seen unless close up. Compare this with the metallic wires and braces traditionally used in the manufacture of regular braces and it isn’t hard to understand why Invisalign trays have become increasingly popular over time. The fact that it can take around a year, or even more, to straighten some teeth makes using this method even more beneficial.
Removable
It should be said that you should do all that you can to wear your trays for the time recommended by our Acton dentist. This is usually for around twenty to twenty two hours each day. Having said that, they are removable by the patient for very good reason and for two specific purposes. Firstly, and this is something patients often mention as a big benefit, you can take them out to eat a meal. This means that there is no more worrying about food getting trapped in the braces. You should also remove them for cleaning the teeth. This is a significant benefit as food that gets trapped in the wires or brackets of metal braces can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
There are other occasions where you can remove the trays for a while but you should consider if this is really necessary. You might want to remove them if you are appearing on TV or a promotional video for your workplace for example. Although the trays are very discreet, a close up shot may well make them visible. Understandably, people often remove them for this and similar purposes.
Caution should be exercised though. The reality is that the more and longer you remove the trays, the longer the treatment period will take. Try to be as conservative as possible when it comes to taking them out and think hard about whether you need to do so.
Comfort
While modern braces have improved over time, it isn’t unusual for patients to report that the brackets are catching on their tongue or other soft tissues and causing some discomfort. The trays that we provide are taken from scans of your own teeth and should feel as comfortable as possible. You will notice some pressure being applied to your teeth. This is so that they can be guided to their correct position. Most patients soon adapt to this but you can take your regular pain killers for a while to help you adjust if you wish.
Fewer dental visits
While we will ask you to come back to see us from time to time so that we can monitor their progress, you are unlikely to need to come as often as would be the case with traditional braces as these need to be adjusted to continue straightening your teeth. With Invisalign, once the trays have moved your teeth as they were designed to do, you simply remove them and replace them with the next tray in the series.
